We met Mr. Deepak AGARWAL, Senior Marketing & Application Manager, STMicroelectronics , who shared about latest Secure Microcontroller demos and innovations in the payment industry .Here’re the edited excerpts from that interaction:

What comes in your mind when we talk about security?

First thing which comes in to my mind in terms of security is to provide user peace of mind while using their  devices. We need to secure our solutions in order  to  protect user privacy & assets by ensuring their confidentiality, integrity & availability to authorized users. Users need to feel secure  & they  should not feel that if I’m using this device which I am connecting to  network get hacked and I can lose my data.  So, something that we have to ensure as an industry that customer gets sufficient comfort to work using our products.

Which are the new features you are adding in your product?

The cyber-attacks are growing day by day making hackers a constant threat which requires us to review, monitor & continuously upgrade our products  to avoid such  threats. We also aim to continuously enhance our product portfolio to adapt to different applications. We started supporting  secured microcontroller mainly in smartcard form factor which is telecom, banking, ID etc. but now the technology can be adopted   in other areas such as brand protection, IOT, Industrial & automotive. This allows ST to secure not only traditional smartcard applications but also the latest ones including contactless transactions & IOT connectivity.

Can you share your view points on the payment industry innovations?

If you see in the payment industry lot of innovations happens which allows flexibility, ease of use & enhanced security. If you see 25 year back we have to stand in a queue to take out money from banks, no ATMs were there.  We now see  wide adoption of  credit &  debit  cards for payment and money withdrawal . Recent times, we also see lot of adoption for  the digital payments through mobile. Various payment technology such as  cash, cheque, cards, internet payment co-exist & constantly upgraded as per market needs .  Now coming to the payment cards, initially cards used magnetic strip then it went to contact EMV cards and now to the dual interface cards . Dual interface card is a contactless card, and well adopted today by users. In last few years, people are getting familiar to this contactless payment card & they prefer to use it as it is faster & easier. We have ST31 platform based on 40 nm technology which is designed for payment applications. Key advantage of our  ST31 platform  that it  is suitable for different form factors such as  wearable  to  payment  cards, thanks to its  best-in-class RF performance & low power design which allows it to work with different antenna sizes.

What are the new innovations you actually introduce in e-SIM ?

Cellular connectivity is becoming a key enabler of connected devices. On ST side, we offer solutions to address

• Mobile phones
• M2M (data only)

eSIM allows enables more seamless user experience. It allows users to store multiple operator profiles & switch between them, so no need to insert or replace a physical SIM card. In mobile phones the switching between operators can be managed by users while in M2M application it is managed remotely.

On ST side, we offer solutions for both applications. Our ST33 platform, today is widely deployed at major OEMs. We can support smaller & thinner packages such as WLCSP & support GSMA compliant personalization on wafer.

For M2M communication, we offer a diversified portfolio with ST4SIM solutions. We provide a complete ecosystem along with our partners that provide & operate device-operating onboarding & service provisioning platforms.

Can you talk about what is dynamic CVV?

CVV is a static 3- or 4-digit code printed on a credit/debit card. The code need to be used for internet transactions. Here with the help of technology this 3 digit code can be changed, so it is called dynamic CVV.  Customer can enter a code that changes on a frequent basis while doing transaction. This offers greater protection against payment fraud using internet. With our ST31 platform supporting dCVV, customer can take advantage of such innovative features.

How will these CVV changes automatically as cards are in form of hard copies?

The ST31N600, based on ST’s 40nm technology, integrates circuitry for energy harvesting and additional connectivity used by dynamic card verification (dCVV) applications, enabling battery-free smartcards to provide  online transactions with enhanced security. Card manufacturers can use e-paper to display dCVV value. Being a battery less solution, it is easier to manufacturer, less expensive & do not depend upon battery life.

Setting Sail for New Horizons at This Year’s Viscom Technology Forum | Electronics Maker

Viscom AG’s Technology Forum has a reputation for offering participants wide-ranging content with valuable practical relevance in a compact format. Looking at the big picture is a key aspect as well. Held at the beginning of October, the event on Viscom’s campus in Hanover, Germany, again offered extensive opportunities to experience cutting-edge inspection solutions for electronics manufacturing live and discuss important topics with fellow specialists, just as before the pandemic. Those unable to attend the Forum in person had the chance to participate in the interactive online program.

How much can our experience help us in a time when changes are happening faster than we were used to in the past? Why do we need a culture today in which it’s also okay to make mistakes? In his talk “Never get lost – the art of making difficult decisions,” well-known keynote speaker Peter Brandl discussed at this year’s Viscom Technology Forum how we can establish more clarity and direction in order to actually achieve the goals we have set for ourselves. Brandl noted that many projects take on an incredible dynamic of their own. Discussions center on problems and difficulties, and everything goes around in circles without moving forwards. Brandl is a consultant, pilot, author, and entrepreneur, and he highlighted various decision-making pitfalls to be avoided. Some examples include entrenched habits or the familiar bubble that happens online in particular, where we’re soon surrounded only by people who have opinions and attitudes similar to our own. Brandl urged his listeners to be more prepared to take risks and to build teams that bring together various strengths and affinities.

One hotly debated issue that requires clear decisions and rapid action in our current times is the question of which climate strategies are the right ones. Karsten Schischke from the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration offered a fascinating insight into this issue at the Viscom Technology Forum. His talk focused on approaches that can be effectively put into action in companies today, from their own production through to the delivery chain. These considerations should take into account the company’s own vehicles, heating using fossil fuels, process emissions, electricity consumption, and upstream and downstream activities. At the same time, Schischke also specifically addressed PCB manufacturing and mentioned related influencing factors such as the number of layers in the product or the energy mix the company uses at its production site.

Both Brandl and Schischke as well as the speakers from Viscom presented their topics in the traditional way, live in front of an audience. In 2021, the Viscom Technology Forum had to be held completely online. It goes without saying that no one involved in the planning could be completely certain that COVID-19 wouldn’t put the in-person component of this year’s hybrid event at risk at the last minute. However, the provisions in place together with appropriate preventive measures made it possible to successfully link this event back to those held in the years prior to the pandemic, and Viscom was able to present a wide range of innovations in front of a large audience of interested attendees. “We showed our best side and can be proud of how we’ve moved forward. That’s something that becomes particularly clear at an event like this,” says Carsten Salewski, Head of Sales, Marketing, and International Business at Viscom. This year’s motto was “New Horizons in Electronics Production – an Innovative Approach to Automation with Smart Inspection, AI and Process Networking.” A corresponding English version of the two-day event was held online directly afterward.

The chosen motto intentionally brings to mind that quality control needs to always stay one step ahead of market requirements in the production of cutting-edge electronics, an area that never stands still. The Viscom Technology Forum responded by offering concrete solutions that open up new horizons. One example is a cleverly designed status monitoring solution for the inspection systems and associated peripheral equipment being used, such as offered by Viscom as part of its modular vConnect platform. This creates the conditions for forward-looking action in keeping with modern predictive maintenance. Central IT management and efficient handling of large quantities of data are other elements in this comprehensive toolbox which was examined from various perspectives during a presentation.

Artificial intelligence is one of many terms that comes up in connection with vConnect. The Viscom Technology Forum 2022 placed a separate focus on this topic. Customers had the chance to discover what AI is capable of on production lines today during one of the workshops on offer. Whether it’s verifying inspection results or segmenting voids – artificial intelligence can provide production staff with effective support in detecting errors and helps to make their work more flexible. Other topics covered in the wide range of talks, workshops, and meet-the-expert sessions included, for example, the use of ECAD data as the basis for creating inspection programs, 3D layer analyses and volumetric display in the area of manual and automated X-ray imaging, the right way to handle radiation loads in inline X-rays with the help of a special dosing server, ensuring the repeat accuracy of 3D AXI inspection results or rapidly transferring 3D AOI data via the open IPC CFX interface.

The industry itself wasn’t the only source of interest in the Viscom Technology Forum. The field of politics was also represented by well-known figures from Germany’s Social Democratic Party, with member of the Bundestag and party head Lars Klingbeil, member of the Bundestag Adis Ahmetovic, deputy chairman of the parliamentary group in the state parliament of Lower Saxony Stefan Politze, and president of the Hanover region Steffen Krach making a visit to the event. An intensive discussion focused on various aspects, including where policymakers can provide effective support to companies like Viscom. In addition, a short tour provided a vivid look at Viscom’s way of working and the special features of the inspection systems produced by its employees.

Those at the Viscom Technology Forum who were interested in taking a detailed look behind the scenes of the company had the chance to go on an extensive tour that offered an exclusive insight into production and logistics. Items on the agenda included, for example, a visit to the competence center for microfocus X-ray tubes, where a wide range of closely interlinked tasks have been located since June 2019, ranging from development, to production and final approval, and all the way to custom adaptations of the tubes. The center is home to three radiation shielding rooms for conducting fatigue and stress tests on the products. Meanwhile, tailored tours focusing on innovation at Viscom provided a compact look at the current highlights of the 3D SPI, 3D AOI, 3D AXI, 3D MXI, 3D Bond, and CCI inspection technologies. Key information was provided directly at each of the inspection systems in the form of a quick overview.

The study, which included 350 chief technology officers, chief information officers and IT directors, covers the most important technologies in 2023 and future technology trends. A More Connected, Sustainable and Virtual World

Which areas of technology will be among five most important in 2023? Global technology leaders surveyed said cloud computing (40%), 5G (38%), metaverse (37%), electric vehicles (EVs) (35%), and the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) (33%) will be the five most important areas of technology next year.

The top industry sectors that will be most impacted by technology in 2023 are:

• (40%) telecommunications
• (39%) automotive and transportation
• (33%) energy
• (33%) banking and financial services

Currently in its nascent stages, the metaverse can be described as an immersive digital network of 3D interactive worlds. Global technologists surveyed said the following innovations will be very important for advancing the development of the metaverse in 2023:

• (71%) 5G and ubiquitous connectivity
• (58%) virtual reality (VR) headsets
• (58%) augmented reality (AR) glasses

Technologies that foster sustainability are growing in importance. A strong majority (94%) of those surveyed agree that they have prioritized sustainability goals for 2023 and beyond, and any technologies their company implements are required to be energy-efficient and help shrink their carbon footprint.

Metaverse-related technologies are also expected to be deployed in various ways: 91% of respondents agree, to bring employees together for corporate training across offices, conferences and hybrid meetings, their company is actively adopting metaverse technology strategies in 2023. In addition, over three-quarters (76%) of global technologists say 26%-75% of interactions with colleagues, customers and management at their company will be conducted virtually in 2023.

AI, Robotics, IIoT and Digital Twins

AI has become ubiquitous. So it is not surprising that 98% of survey respondents agree that in 2023 and beyond, AI-powered autonomous, collaborative software and mobile robots will automate processes and tasks, including data analysis, allowing humans to be more efficient and effective. In addition, when

asked what percentage of jobs across the entire global economy will be augmented by AI-driven software in 2023, 24% of technologists surveyed said 1-25%; 40% of those surveyed said 26-50%; and 27% of respondents said 51-75%. Related to the IIoT, which optimizes smart industrial machines, sensors, processors and the real-time data they generate, 98% surveyed say using digital twin technology and virtual simulations in 2023 to more efficiently design, develop and safely test product prototypes and manufacturing processes will be important, including 68% who say it will be very important.

EVs, 5G and 6G

Because of its fast and high data throughput, 5G will impact vehicle connectivity and automation in 2023, 97% of survey respondents agree.

Respondents also said that 5G will benefit these areas the most in the next year:

• (56%) remote learning and education
• (54%) telemedicine, including remote surgery, health record transmissions
• (51%) entertainment, sports and live event streaming
• (49%) personal and professional day-to-day communications
• (29%) transportation and traffic control
• (25%) manufacturing/assembly
• (23%) carbon footprint reduction and energy efficiency

A strong majority (95%) of global technologists agree that space satellites for remote mobile connectivity will be a game-changer in 2023 because they enable 5G device connections anywhere, 24/7, leapfrogging terrestrial infrastructure. Close to nine out of 10 of global technologists (88%) agree 6G will primarily be an evolving work in progress in 2023, but that in half a decade 6G will be standardized.

Cybersecurity Concerns Rise

The cybersecurity concerns most likely to be in technology leaders’ top three in 2023 – which rose as compared to levels of concern in 2022 – are issues related to:

• (51%) cloud vulnerability (up from 35% in 2022)
• (46%) the mobile and hybrid workforce, including employees using their own devices (up from 39% in 2022)
• (43%) data center vulnerability (up from 27% in 2022)

Infineon’s REAL3™ ToF imager enables advanced obstacle avoidance and smart navigation in DREAME’s new vacuum cleaning robot W10 Pro | Electronics Maker

Munich, Germany – 28 October, 2022 – Dreame, a leading Chinese based company specialized in smart home cleaning devices, has launched its new vacuum cleaning robot, the Dreame Bot W10 Pro. The smart vacuum cleaner is equipped with a camera featuring the REAL3 Time of Flight (ToF) image sensor from Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) and pmdtechnologies. The ToF imager enables smart navigation, 3D mapping, and excellent obstacle avoidance for service robots, cleaning robots and mops.

“The camera of Dreame’s premium robot vacuum cleaner is equipped with our state-of-the-art 3D ToF imager technology. Combined with the latest technology for better contextual awareness from Dreame, the imager enables the cleaning device to identify and avoid obstacles,” said Christian Herzum, Vice President Product-Line 3D-Sensing from Infineon. “Our advanced 3D vision engineering helps service robots learn from their daily cleaning routine and recognize household items that may interfere with floor cleaning, such as cords, shoes, slippers and socks.”

Infineon’s 3D ToF imager provides additional distance information for each of the cameras’ 38000 pixels. It offers significantly improved 3D accuracy and precision compared to conventional solutions including single-pixel ToF devices. This high resolution enables 3D camera designs with a large vertical field of view (FoV), allowing robots to detect small objects with high resolution and measure the height of furniture. Without getting stuck, the robot can thus move under the couch, chair, table or other objects, reducing maintenance.

Since pmdtechnologies patented SBI (Suppression of Background Illumination) technology is integrated in each pixel, the cleaning robot can be used in different lighting conditions. As a result, the ToF imager generates robust 3D depth data that allows the room to be imaged in difficult ambient lighting conditions. Even disturbances such as strong sunlight, dim light or materials with different reflection indexes do not affect the repeatability and quality of the measurement.

Built on a 28-nm FD-SOI process node, the Stellar P6 provides up to 2 x 16 MB of phase-change memory ready for over-the-air updates for greater performance and reliability in harsher conditions, such as high temperatures1. How is the car changing?

In a feature article published in 2021 in IEEE Spectrum, Robert Charette explained: “how software is eating the car.” Gathering analyses from experts and industry leaders, the paper indicates that a car may contain more than 150 electronic control units (ECUs) running collectively hundreds of millions of lines of code. A few years ago, only high-end models displayed such complexity, but today even mainstream trims are software driven. The rise of software in cars follows the increasing number of ICs. Hence, the automotive industry is undergoing massive transformations that redefine what customers expect from a vehicle. Manufacturers must, therefore, adapt to the new trends and requests.

Consumers are familiar with many of the transformations currently shaping new vehicles. With the advent of more and better sensors, drivers started asking for innovative safety features that use software to recognize pedestrians or anticipate accidents. Consequently, makers developed code to predictively alert drivers of a potential collision or remind them of upcoming critical maintenance operations. Similarly, computer programs define new and more sustainable driving modes to extend a vehicle’s efficiency. Software-defined cars are also unique due to their connectivity to a cellular network and cloud platform that enables them to receive dynamic updates. Hence, for the first time, manufacturers can issue a patch instead of an expensive recall, vastly improving the consumer’s experience.

Value proposition for the consumers

Car makers also benefit from these new business models in unique ways. Thanks to over-the-air updates, manufacturers no longer have to release next year’s model to innovate. Moreover, they can port previously purchased functionalities or a customer’s settings to other physical models, thus increasing user retention. Subscription models generate new and recurring revenue streams by enabling makers to add services and tailor experiences. It is far simpler to customize software than a car’s frame. Consequently, companies now use software to build a more personal relationship with their customers while transcending a physical vehicle. It’s no longer about a machine but an ecosystem of applications. And now that OEMs treat cars as smart devices, they need development powerhouses.

The challenges behind this new transformation and how OEMs are dealing with it

The challenges to software development

Users want software-driven vehicles, and car makers aim to deliver. However, the last 60 years of computer science testify that a software ecosystem is only as effective as the hardware platform it runs on and the tools that take advantage of it. The history of ecosystems is filled with promising projects that failed because they were too hard to work on or couldn’t bring the performance and features promised. Software-defined vehicles thus demand a robust silicon architecture and development environments that will hasten software engineering while ensuring optimal security, safety, and performance. The problem is that creating an optimal software paradigm for cars can be challenging.

In a guest commentary published in the journal ATZelectronics worldwide², Jörg Ohlsen explains that some in the industry are struggling to find the “skills [or] resources […] on the industrial scales [needed] to be competitive.” While some have cracked the code and are profiting from the new paradigm established by software-defined vehicles, Ohlsen posits that some are feeling “overwhelmed” because their core business is so different from software development. Some car makers expressed a similar sentiment and delegated software creation to OEMs as a solution.

The challenges to software-driven vehicles

Besides grappling with software development, companies must deal with the specific challenges of a software-defined vehicle. For instance, nodes, domains, and zone controllers run in parallel, sometimes interacting with one another or independently, and must not interfere with one another. The head-up display (HUD) on a windshield must work with the cruise control or lane-change detection to display information and warning. Similarly, the airbag deployment system can’t be affected by the data transmitted through the entertainment unit. Moreover, with the advent of software-defined vehicles, car makers must deal with more data and a different type of connectivity, such as cellular networks that deliver over-the-air updates.

The wide variety of software solutions combined with the need to resort to a greater range of providers and OEMs can create a perfect storm. Consequently, OEMs are rethinking how they manage operating systems, software stacks, and development operations. They are creating new partnerships and adopting platforms like Stellar products to broaden their capabilities and meet the new demands of software-defined vehicles. Similarly, car makers must ensure that ECUs work together and that all modules follow strict safety, security, and reliability standards. Even if they rely on OEMs, manufacturers must understand how to build an ecosystem, which also explains why many require Stellar products.

The Stellar solution to software-driven vehicles

Why Stellar P, Stellar G, and Stellar E series?

The launch of the Stellar P6 is symbolic because it comes at a time when the industry is clamoring for a hardware solution to the challenges inherent to software-defined vehicles. Stellar is a platform featuring 32-bit microcontrollers by ST for the automotive industry. There are two main categories of devices: Stellar Actuation and Stellar Integration MCUs. The former includes the Stellar E series, which is fast enough to drive silicon carbide or gallium nitride transistors. It provides fast analog-to-digital conversion, precise pulse-width modulation, and more, thanks to advanced timers and a CORDIC accelerator, among other things. As a result, it offers the necessary actuation for the drivetrains and power conversion operations found in electric vehicles.

The second category of Stellar devices, the Stellar Integration, comprises Stellar G and Stellar P. The first is for zone controllers, gateways, and body integration. It acts as a power, data, and I/O hub, among many others, or works as an aggregator for modules in a specific vehicle zone. Finally, the Stellar P helps engineers simplify designs by facilitating the integration of drivetrains and domain-oriented applications. All Stellar Integration MCU have real-time and deterministic performances to help run the various modules efficiently. Hence, the Stellar family of devices is broad enough to handle the ecosystems that consumers rely on in their software-driven vehicles.

How to answer security, safety, and communication challenges?

As developers also look to take advantage of the new software paradigm to improve overall security, ST provides support for over-the-air updates on all Stellar MCUs to ensure carmakers patch issues rapidly. The update mechanism also helps save up to 50% of memory usage. As a result, engineers can use fewer memory modules for a lower bill of materials. Additionally, all devices include a hardware security module and a cryptographic hardware accelerator. Developers can thus adopt best practices to protect keys or encrypt and decrypt data without hindering performance.

ST also prioritized communication interfaces to provide a software-driven platform suited for various car applications. Designers will find the traditional modular controller area network (MCAN) supporting CAN-FD and compatibility with LIN interfaces. Moreover, the Stellar Integration MCUs feature CAN-XL interfaces, which support far greater payloads and can help future-proof a platform. Stellar P and Stellar G also offer an ethernet controller for high-speed communications. Finally, Stellar Integration devices support hardware and software hypervisors to help with safety requirements. Infineon delivers next-generation CIRRENT™ SaaS offering to optimize product development with intelligent data | Electronics Maker

At OktoberTech 2022, Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) is bringing digitalization to the edge-from-the-cloud. Today, the company announced the next generation of its Software as a Service (SaaS) offering, Infineon’s CIRRENT IoT Network Intelligence (INI) – a cloud SaaS offering that helps IoT developers quickly and cost-effectively gather information about their products to increase reliability, improve product performance, and reduce support cost.

Infineon leverages Cerence Emergency Vehicle Detection to enable “the hearing car” with reliable detection of emergency vehicle sirens | Electronics Maker

To improve road safety, many countries are introducing regulations that require drivers to actively yield the right of way to emergency vehicles. As more autonomous vehicles are deployed, regulations are likely to include self-driving vehicles that can also detect and respond to emergency vehicles and meet safety requirements. In numerous instances, this will require a combination of audible and visual warning signals. Today, Infineon Technologies AG (FSE: IFX / OTCQX: IFNNY) announced that it is working with Cerence Inc. (NASDAQ: CRNC) to build a solution based on automotive qualified XENSIV MEMS microphones (IM67D130A) from Infineon and Cerence Emergency Vehicle Detection (EVD) software. This will enable vehicles to actively detect approaching emergency vehicles, especially when they are not in sight.

Reliable detection, classification and sound localization
The emergency siren detection system provides a complementary detection modality for autonomous vehicles and enhances their perception capabilities. The system

combines an array of XENSIV MEMS microphones, strategically placed on the outside of the vehicle, with Cerence EVD.

The XENSIV MEMS microphone is qualified according to AEC-Q103-003 and features an extended operating temperature profile from -40°C to +105°C, enabling various use cases in harsh automotive environments. With a total harmonic distortion (THD) of less than 0.5 percent at a sound pressure level (SPL) of 94 dB and a high acoustic overload point (AOP) of 130 dBSPL, the microphone can capture distortion-free audio signals in noisy environments. This allows signals to be reliably classified even when background noise obstructs the siren tone.

Cerence EVD can be integrated into the automotive assistant or on separate controllers, it uses the microphones to accurately and reliably detect the sound of sirens. In addition, Cerence EVD can estimate the sound source location from emergency sirens of police cars, ambulances and fire trucks. Once a siren is identified, the driver – or, in autonomous vehicles, the automated driving assistant – is informed to react accordingly. Human drivers can be notified in a multi-modal way e.g. volume of the radio or other media is reduced, a visual warning may appear on the screen of the head unit, and acoustic warning is given via the vehicle assistant.

Availability
The XENSIV MEMS microphone IM67D130A can be ordered. Infineon also offers a development kit that helps developers to quickly evaluate MEMS microphones. The kit enables component-level performance evaluation and can also be used to connect multiple microphones and test different placement configurations on the vehicle. This way the optimum number of microphones and their position can be determined without big effort.

Industry Report Reveals 33% Plan to Deploy Wi-Fi 7 by 2024 | Electronics Maker

WBA cross-industry survey reveals Wi-Fi 7 is top global priority to supercharge Wi-Fi capabilities and drive new IIoT use cases

Wi-Fi 7 is emerging as one of the most important areas of investment in new connectivity technologies. That is one key finding from the latest cross-industry survey of service providers, technology vendors and enterprises by the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA), the global industry body dedicated to improving Wi-Fi standards and services.

The findings, released by the WBA as part of the WBA Annual Industry Report 2023, reveal more than a third (33%) of service providers, technology vendors and enterprises already have plans to deploy Wi-Fi 7 by the end of 2023. Wi-Fi 7 will supercharge current Wi-Fi capabilities with new technologies, such as multilink operation and time sensitive networking – ideal for Industry 4.0 applications – while leveraging the 6GHz spectrum dynamically with automatic frequency coordination.

The report also revealed that Wi-Fi 6E has now become the de facto industry standard, with 53% having already deployed the technology and a further 44% already working on plans to adopt Wi-Fi 6E in the next 12-18 months.

Immersive Tech and Quality of Experience Driving Adoption

Uptake of Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 is being driven by a growing appetite for data-intensive, low-latency applications and use cases, from smart cities and immersive technologies such as the future metaverse to Industry 4.0. Newer Wi-Fi technologies offer better scheduling and greater interference management, which respondents to the survey now see as essential in supporting high-quality video, virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and other advanced consumer experiences.

The report detailed a renewed focus on the quality of experience (QoE) delivered to end-users, with 90% of service providers, equipment manufacturers and enterprises now ranking it as a key differentiator in monetizing their Wi-Fi services. Sixty-one percent of respondents identified services such as high-definition video streaming, AR, VR and potential metaverse applications as key revenue opportunities.

Momentum for WBA OpenRoaming Gathers Pace

Global momentum for WBA OpenRoamingTM, which reached a milestone of one million hotspots in early 2022, was also underlined by the report. OpenRoaming enables users to connect automatically and securely to millions of Wi-Fi networks around the world without the need for logins, registrations, or passwords, facilitating “always on” connectivity. Passpoint technology removes the friction usually associated with onboarding and offboarding between hotspots. Sixty-two percent of service providers, equipment manufacturers and enterprises worldwide will have already deployed Passpoint/OpenRoaming technology or are planning to do so by the end of 2023. A further 25% are expected to deploy the technology by 2025.

Among those adopting OpenRoaming, 51% said the key driver was improving the overall customer experience.

Convergence is Critical

Other key findings from the report reinforce the need for convergence between Wi-Fi and cellular technologies in the interests of creating a seamless user experience:

• In enterprise markets, 70% said Wi-Fi and 5G will coexist, with 61% claiming convergence would support enhanced flexibility for enterprise services
• 53% said that convergence between licensed and unlicensed technologies was critical or important for the current commercial strategy

Supermicro collaborates with Infineon on green computing | Electronics Maker

Munich, Germany – 17 October, 2022 – The new dimension of digitalization is enormous and global data volumes will only multiply exponentially in the future with video streaming, virtual conferences, cloud services, cryptocurrencies and many other digital applications. Experts estimate a 146-fold increase in data in just 15 years. According to the US International Trade Commission [1], 175 zettabytes (≙ 175,000,000,000,000,000 bytes) of data is expected to be reached as early as 2025. Currently, approximately 8,000 data centers process, store and network these huge volumes of data. In addition to performance and security, optimizing energy efficiency is critical to their profitability and sustainability.

The power usage effectiveness (PUE) measurement divides the total power delivered to the data center by the actual power consumed by the IT equipment. An ideal PUE value is 1.0, which means that all the power required for a data center is in the actual computing devices, not in overhead costs such as cooling or power conversion. According to recent research [2], IT and data center managers reported an average annual PUE ratio of 1.57 at their largest data center, indicating there is room for improvement for uncontrolled cooling and power costs, along with reducing the CO 2 footprint.

Supermicro’s green computing platform can significantly improve PUE. Specifically, the Supermicro MicroBlade® family offers the best server density for a variety of processors, up to 112 x 1-socket Atom® nodes, 56 x 1-socket Xeon® nodes, and 28 x 2-socket Xeon® nodes in 6U. This can be effortlessly deployed at scale and provisioned in volume with its data center-friendly features and designs, including free-air cooling and Battery Backup Power (BBP®). The MicroBlade can provide up to 86 percent power efficiency improvement and 56 percent density improvement when compared to standard 1U rackmount servers.

The MicroBlade server uses Infineon’s OptiMOS integrated power stages TDA21490 and TDA21535. The TDA21490 enables a robust and reliable voltage regulator design for high-performance xPUs, ASICs and SoCs used in server, memory, AI and networking applications. The device offers best-in-class efficiency with its OptiMOS power MOSFETs in a thermally efficient package. The low quiescent current driver enables a deep-sleep mode to further increase efficiency at light loads, and provides excellent current monitoring that significantly improves system performance. In addition to the robust OptiMOS MOSFET technology, the TDA21490’s comprehensive fault protection feature further enhances the system’s robustness and reliability.

The TDA21535 incorporates a low quiescent current synchronous buck-gate driver IC in a co-package with high- and low-side MOSFETs, and an active diode structure that achieves low values for the body-diode forward voltage (V sd) similar to a Schottky barrier diode with very little reverse recovery charge. The internal MOSFET current measurement algorithm with temperature compensation in the TDA21535 achieves superior current measurement accuracy compared to best-in-class controller-based induction DC resistance measurement methods. Operation at a switching frequency of up to 1.5 MHz enables high-performance transient response and allows output inductance and capacitance to be reduced while maintaining industry-leading efficiency.
